Despite overseeing a cornerstone of Gotham's criminal underworld, most Batman stories have focused on other villains given Penguin's cartoony nature. The film performed moderately well at the box office, but gained more notoriety and a larger fanbase in subsequent years thanks to video rentals and the occasional rebroadcast on ABC. Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin is one of Batman's oldest and most famous villains, often appearing in the comics and other mediums, though not much in live-action. Also, Meriwether, who took over the role from Julie Newmar, is the least impressive on-screen Catwoman, which doesn't really help matters. While the film is a lot of fun and full of goofy scenes, including the infamous shark attack on Batman, it's pretty much just more of the same stuff that we'd previously seen on the television show. Add in dodgy CGI, and you have an ugly misfire across the board. Lex Luthor's manipulations are laughable enough, but making the two heroes' brawl culminate in a serious moment of growly bonding over their mothers' shared name is the Granny's Peach Tea-flavored icing on an already foul cake. Both deserved to star in standalone films before crossing paths with other heroes, as there simply isn't enough time to develop their characters before the movie's rushed, unfocused confrontation begins.ĭespite some intriguing ideas, the core disagreement that pits Batman against Superman feels artificial in its construction, leaving viewers unconvinced that either hero would act as rashly as they do here. While we do see a few of those elements make their way to Colin Farrell’s interpretation of the character in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, there is one thing we won’t see Penguin doing. Yes, the movie is technically a sequel to 2013's "Man of Steel," but "Batman v Superman" really created DC's shared universe, and it does so poorly by mashing Superman up with our first introductions to Wonder Woman and Ben Affleck's tired, grizzled Batman.
