Then quite suddenly, none of it mattered when health and safety became an issue. I had been looking forward to all of these events for his life. His spring musical was scheduled for the weekend following the shut down on Thursday. When my son experienced the quarantine for the last quarter of his Senior year, I was devastated. But if he gets to busy "studying hard," I get it. A Mama could hope that he keeps in touch. It will be the highlight of his extended absence, to get to see him for a couple of months.Īnd knowing that he is going to exactly the school he wanted to attend, learning in the field he wants to study makes the separation so much easier to bear. But instead of focusing on the number of days he will be away, I am going to focus on that day he actually returns. From today until his temporary return is 101 days, including weekends. He doesn't know it yet, but I have already begun the countdown to the day he returns. At Thanksgiving, he will stay home until the Spring semester begins. They will have no Labor Day break, no Fall Break and no other opportunities to return home.
I still have to get up on Thursday morning, drive my son and all of his belongings to a distant college campus where he will stay until Thanksgiving. In the end, avoiding it didn't change it.
I've focused on other activities and distractions trying to prevent what I know is going to happen. I have been trying to social distance myself from having to face reality. No matter how much I try to resist, time will pass, days will fade, and events will take place. Right? The inevitable will not happen if just don't turn the page. Right? If I don't charge my watch, time stands still. If I don't turn the page on the calendar, it won't happen, right? Isn't that how it works? If I don't replace the batteries in my clock, time won't pass away.
